Brave River Solutions Teams with Cranston Students to Create New School Website

Students from the New England Laborers’ Cranston Public Schools (NEL/CPS) Construction Career Academy met with the Brave River team to learn about the technology industry.
WARWICK- April 12, 2007 – Students from the New England Laborers’ Cranston Public Schools (NEL/CPS) Construction Career Academy visited Brave River Solutions today for an educational field trip. The students, who are working with Brave River to create their school’s new website, met with the Brave River team to learn about the technology industry.
The trip started off with a discussion about the students’ future plans and career goals. While many of the students mentioned construction in their post-graduate plans, they also revealed an interest in film editing, video production, and computer technology. The students, who created videos and images for the upcoming site, even brought their own video equipment to record the field trip for a future movie.
Travis Mouat, a Senior Programmer/Analyst at Brave River, gave the students their first look at the website. He explained how they could use the site’s content manager to make changes or updates on their own. The group concluded their trip with a tour of Brave River’s office, giving them an opportunity to meet the staff and learn about their jobs.
The NEL/CPS Construction Career Academy is a charter school in Cranston, RI with approximately 108 students in grades 9-12. John Santangelo, a math teacher at the school, credits the success of the school to its hands-on approach to learning. "Give them something to do with their hands and they go to town."
Brave River Solutions partnered with the school to give students exposure to the technologies used to build a website. Jim McAssey, Vice President of Brave River, says, “Our goal is to help them build a high-quality website, while teaching them some of the skills they will need to keep it up-to-date.” He hopes to leave them with a site that is easy to maintain by faculty and the current students, as well as students in future classes.
