The Move to Circular Facebook Profile Pictures

The Move to Circular Facebook Profile Pictures

Facebook changed its profile picture and cover photo dimensions – are your images the right size?

Facebook recently introduced changes to the look of profile pages and icons on the news feed. Although profile pages continue to have the same square icon, this image now becomes a circle when displayed on someone’s news feed. See below for Facebook’s example:

It’s important to note that all Facebook posts and ads will display this change. In general, FB recommends using a PNG file for the best appearing picture quality for both your profile picture and cover photo. Cover photos are also now wider, and are required to be at least 400 pixels wide, and 150 pixels tall.

The change for circular profile images may be part of a recent trend that suggests circular images are more flattering thanks to their centered focus, lessened background area, and the depth given by cutting off corners.

To keep track of the change, we organized all the dimensions you need to know in one place:

Profile Picture:

  • 170×170 pixel Square on computers.
  • This image will be cropped into a circle when displayed on the Facebook news feed or on an ad. On smartphones, the image appears as a 128×128 pixels, and on featured phones it will appear as a 36×36.

Cover Photo:

  • Must be at least 400×150.
  • The cover photo will display at 820×312 pixels tall on computers, and 640×360 on smartphones.

TIP: Facebook also recommends that an sRGB JPG File that is 851×315 pixels tall and less than 100 kilobytes will load the fastest.
