Website For Bank On Providence Community Finance Initiative Launched

As part of Mayor Cicilline’s Operation Opportunity program, the Bank on Providence website, which was designed and developed by Brave River Solutions, was launched today.
Providence, RI (May 12, 2010)- This new program is aimed at keeping the money of Providence residents out of high-cost bank alternatives and putting it back in their pockets. In Providence alone it is estimated that at least 12,000 families do not have access to a checking or savings account. These families are then forced to turn to costly alternatives, such as check-cashing stations, as a means to obtain the money to provide for themselves. The city of Providence has partnered with numerous local banks to provide a variety of opportunities for these families, and promote financial security for its residents.
The website, which was launched on May 12th, provides those interested in the program with valuable resources to get started on their road to long-term financial security. Along with a detailed description of the initiative in both English and Spanish, the site also links to the various bank partners and their respective Bank on Providence offerings. An on-screen calculator also provides a quick display of how much money prospective participants could be saving by switching from check-cashers to a secure checking account. In addition to essential account sign-up information, there is also a section providing links to free financial management classes provided by local nonprofits as part of the Bank on Providence program. “We design and develop many websites at Brave River, but it is especially rewarding when a site provides such a valuable service to the community,” said Ernie Gaines, President at Brave River Solutions.
The participating partners include Bank of America, Citizens Bank, Bank RI, Coastway Community Bank, Rhode Island Credit Union, Domestic Bank, Sovereign Bank, and Washington Trust. Each one of these banks will be providing low or no-cost checking accounts over the next two years at over thirty Providence locations.
